Certificate of Higher Education in Special Educational Needs in association with The Institute of Child Education and Psychology (ICEP Europe) & Leeds Beckett University offers a suite of online modules for those working with children and young people who have Special Educational Needs, leading to the award of a Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) in Special Educational Needs.

This undergraduate programme is relevant for Special Needs Assistants (SNAs), HTLAs Youth workers and those with an interest in Special Needs, at the beginning of their careers in education or looking for a new career path. It is also very relevant to other professionals working in education, social care workers, and parents and carers of those who have Special Educational Needs.

The programme will be accredited by Leeds Beckett University (20 Credits per module) at Level 6, allowing you to achieve a Certificate of Higher Education, through completing six online modules, over a period of two years. The online delivery and modular structure gives you the flexibility to study when and where it suits and offers access to quality, affordable and specialist training regardless of location.

Who is the programme aimed at?

The programmes are equally relevant for teachers, Special Needs Assistants (SNAs), Teaching Assistants (TAs), Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs), Learning Support/Resource Teachers as well as other professionals (e.g. educational psychologists, social care workers) and parents or carers of those who have Special Educational Needs.

Future Careers

Working with children who have special education needs is both challenging and rewarding. Our course will help you perform better in your role, achieving more for yourself and those you work with. You'll look at what you do in the classroom, why you do it and if it works. If you'd like to pursue a role in teaching, our course can set you on your way to achieving qualified teacher status. For teachers and other professionals the Advanced Diploma can offer a route to specialist roles and access to other advanced training.

For the award of Certificate of Higher Education, all six of the above modules must be completed at level 6.

Tuition and Support

Each module is taught over a period of 8 weeks

Each module will be taught online as a distance learning module, and you will have the opportunity to interact with peers in online class discussions

Specialised tutors working in the area of learning disabilities will provide you with individual support and guidance as you complete your studies online

Technical support is provided by a dedicated team of qualified learning technologists, who can be contacted by telephone or email 

Normally, applicants will have English Language and Maths GCSE grade C or equivalent and be new to Higher Education study. Applicants should include their occupational experience, career history and future aspirations in their supporting information.

The fees are £2,032.80 per year. Each module costs £677.60.

The Certificate of Higher Education can be completed in two years; the total fee will be £4,065.60.
