Introduction

The changing needs of a changing world demand new levels of mathematical literacy for the 21st century and new teaching approaches can help us to meet this challenge. Numeracy is a life-skill and essential for learning other subjects; this course is designed to provide you with a practical toolkit for enhancing the numeracy skills of all your students.

About the course

Developing a healthy understanding of mathematics is a fundamental skill that not only enhances learning in other subjects, but has a direct impact on our quality of life and sense of independence. Research has shown that countries who are world-leaders in the field of mathematics implement a strong numerical backbone through all levels education.

Rather than teaching maths through a passive ‘transmission’ model, it is imperative to encourage students at being creative and confident with numbers by engaging them in active learning methodologies that excite and stimulate. Drawing on learning theory and the latest findings from neuroscience, this course offers an array of ideas and resources that demonstrate how to engage and inspire even the most reluctant mathematician in your classroom.

Who is this course aimed at?

This course is designed to meet the needs of teachers and other professionals working in a range of educational settings including mainstream and special education, primary and secondary schools.

Approved by the Department of Education and Skills

This course is approved by the Department of Education and Skills. Three EPV days will be allowed for primary school teachers who take the course during the summer term. Please note this provision applies only to the summer term as per Department guidelines.

This course is designed to provide you with a practical toolkit for enhancing the numeracy skills of all your students.  Integrating a more stimulating approach to teaching maths will empower students to develop mathematical reasoning and critical thinking, allowing them to adapt that understanding depending on the required application.  The active learning methodologies advocated throughout this course are grounded in learning theory and the latest findings from neuroscience and have proven impacts on learning and achievement.

Set in the context of the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy and the recent School Self-Evaluation guidelines, the resources and teaching methods provided throughout this course will engage students and accelerate learning by creating a fun and rewarding environment in any classroom. The course provides a clear overview of numeracy and provides an array of active learning methodologies designed to promote and improve numeracy development. Throughout the course the use of assessment as a teaching and learning tool is explored and you will also have the opportunity to develop your own skills for teaching specific aspects of numeracy.

Interactive Learning Assignments accompany each module. Each student is also required to complete a Reflective Assignment as well as a CPD record.

Upon completion of the course you will receive a Certificate of Continuing Professional Development and a Learning Log of your work, which can be included in your CPD portfolio.
